CURRICULUM
Our program runs from 4’s through 12th grade.
GAN KATAN (4 and 5 year old)
Students feel like they can jump into the pages of the Torah. This program helps students understand the cycle of stories of the Torah and enables them to participate in Shabbat prayers, blessings, and in the larger Synagogue community. Students will eat challah, drink grape juice, participate in the Torah Parade and end the service with the older students.
KINDERGARTEN
Students embrace their Jewish roots and gain a true sense of Jewish pride by capturing their imagination and attention with games, songs, movement, and dance, as well as teach an introduction to the Aleph-Bet. Students create memories that will inspire them for the rest of their lives.
ALEPH/FIRST GRADE
Students build upon a still-new foundation for Jewish learning in an experiential atmosphere, with a focus on Mitzvot, Alef-Bet, Israel, Jewish Holidays, and Torah stories.
BET/SECOND GRADE
Students deepen their understanding of Jewish values and Mitzvot (Tzedakah, Tikkkun Olam, Klal Yisrael and so on). In Hebrew, students learn letter and vowel recognition, as well as the first phases of decoding and reading of basic Hebrew vocabulary.
GIMMEL/THIRD GRADE
Students focus on learning ritual and ritual objects (Shabbat, Kashrut, Mezuzah, Tefillin, etc.), and continue to work on reading full Hebrew words. Additionally, students start to explore their own relationship with God.
DALET/ FOURTH GRADE
Students continue to explore stories from our tradition and Jewish holidays. Additionally students begin to learn the history of the modern state of Israel (sacred places, important Israeli figures, Zionism, etc.).
Students also strengthen their Hebrew reading skills in decoding and fluency, and start to familiarize themselves with words from our siddur and tradition.
HEY/FIFTH GRADE
Students focus on learning Jewish life-cycles (Brit-Milah, baby naming, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Jewish wedding, and Jewish mourning rituals). Students also further enhance their reading and writing abilities in the Hebrew language through auditory, visual, and kinesthetic exercises.
VAV/SIXTH GRADE
Students dive into a journey through Jewish history, focusing on European and American Jewry, the Holocaust, and Judaism in modern times. Students continue to practice reading and writing in Hebrew, with more emphasis on vocabulary from our liturgy. Additionally, conversational Hebrew exercises are used in the classroom to learn Modern Hebrew.
ZAYIN/SEVENTH GRADE
Students work on honing their ability to participate and conduct Shacharit Services, and learn the necessary skills for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah (trope, blessings, etc.).
On Thursdays 7th graders join the Chativa program (see below).
CHATIVA PROGRAM (EIGHTH-NINTH GRADE)
Students in this program discuss hot topics, current events, and teen issues, through a Jewish angle, in an
age-appropriate way, and in a less formal environment, with emphasis on social interactions and community building within the teens.
TICHON PROGRAM (TENTH-ELEVENTH GRADE)
Students in this program meet once a month on Thursdays for lively discussions around hot topics, with emphasis on social interactions and community building within the teens. Students may also join the
12th grade class (see below).
TWELFTH GRADE Program takes place once a month on Thursdays.
Students are invited to join Rabbi Scheinberg and some special guests for evening education sessions focusing on the history of modern Israel and controversies about Israel.
